Before Cozy Mysteries Had Their Name

Before cozy mysteries had their name, they had a feeling.

A small village. A clever amateur sleuth. A crime committed offstage, preferably without too much gore on the carpet. A cast of suspects who all have secrets, grudges, and surprisingly strong opinions about tea.

The cozy mystery tradition has roots in the Golden Age of detective fiction, especially writers like Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Ngaio Marsh. These stories gave readers puzzles, wit, atmosphere, and the delicious pleasure of suspecting absolutely everyone.

Today’s cozies have carried that spirit into bookshops, bakeries, seaside towns, quilting circles, libraries, and yes, the occasional foggy Pacific Northwest village where the cat may know more than she’s letting on.

At their heart, cozy mysteries remind us that even when something terrible happens, order can be restored, the truth can come out, and there is probably coffee nearby.

What’s your favorite cozy mystery setting?
